If you are buying the plastic wheels commonly found in pet stores, I can see why you are getting so frustrated. They are cheaply made and just cannot handle too much abuse. While the metal flying saucer and other metal wheels may cost more initially, you are likely to save money over time investing in a good quality wheel since you'll be replacing those cheap plastic ones regularly.
If you are looking for opinions based on experiences with certain wheels, check out If you do a search in the Chinchilla Housing section you should be able to find many posts giving opinions about various types of wheels, both good and bad. Occasionally there are also wheels posted for sale in the Chinchilla supplies for sale section, or a post made to supplies wanted may prove to be helpful as well.

I did a similar ride in the Summer. Most of us had MTBs with semi-slick tyres as I did or hybrids, a few had road bikes. For extra comfort I had a suspension seatpost to soak up some of the bumps, as most of the trip was on tarmac, locking out the front suspension helped too. Just avoid full suspension as the extra weight will really slow you down. If I do a similar ride again I'll stick with MTB, semi-slicks and suspension seatpost.
